250th Anniversary

30 Aug 2009

September sees Carron Phoenix reach a momentous milestone in the company's history, celebrating 250 years of Carron heritage at its Falkirk site in Scotland. Neil Clark, Sales & Marketing Director and Simon Cotton, Managing Director

Carron Phoenix can trace back its roots to 1759 when the Carron Company was established as an iron foundry in Falkirk and was a major driver of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland during the 18th and 19th Centuries. At one time the company employed around 5000 people, operated its own fleet of steamships and even issued its own currency to enable trading around the globe.

During its history, the Carron Company has manufactured a range of products including cast iron seats, old fashioned flat irons, fireplaces, cast iron baths and even range cookers. However the company is most noted for its Carronade cannons which were used by Nelson at Trafalgar and Wellington at Waterloo. Examples can still be seen at Edinburgh castle. In addition, the Carron Company produced the iconic red telephone and post boxes. Carron moved into the manufacture of stainless steel sinks in 1960, followed by synthetic sinks in 1984.

says Simon Cotton, managing director of Carron Phoenix:

"This company has been a part of Britain's heritage for 250 years. That's a huge responsibility, especially for someone who learned about Carron in my local history at school in Central Scotland.  This is a very proud moment for the company and we have a hugely experienced and committed workforce which makes working at Carron a pleasure."
